Robert Moffat 

(1795-1883) 

Robert Moffat was a Scottish Congregational missionary sent by the London Missionary Society.

He served for nearly 50 years among the Tswana (Bechuana) people in present-day Botswana and South Africa.

Scottish missionary to South Africa who translated the first Bible into Tswana.

Testimony:- Robert Moffat sacrificed comfort and recognition to spend nearly fifty years translating the Bible and planting the gospel among the Tswana people of Southern Africa.


What did Robert Moffat do for God in ministry?

1. Pioneer missionary in Southern Africa

•Arrived in Africa in 1817

•Founded the mission station at Kuruman

•Served one people group for almost his entire life


2.Bible translation

•Translated the entire Bible into Setswana (Tswana language)

•One of the earliest full African-language Bible translations


3.Evangelism and church planting

•Preached patiently with very few early converts

•Helped establish churches and Christian communities


4.Education and printing

•Started schools for children and adults

•Set up a printing press to produce Scriptures and teaching materials


5.Mentor to others

•Influenced and encouraged David Livingstone, who later married his daughter Mary

•Spent most of his life far from his homeland

•Endured isolation, danger, and extreme hardship

•Worked for years without visible success

•Lived simply and endured harsh African conditions

•Gave his youth, strength, and old age to one mission field


How did Robert Moffat die?

•Died in 1883 at the age of 88

•Place: England, after returning from Africa in old age

•Cause: Natural causes
